The calendar year of OISTIC begins on Januray 12 with distribution of food packets and sweets amongst the poor and the homeless including stray children, who make their living , for instance by collecting plastic bottles and wastes discarded at railway stations. Through this ritual, the members commemorate in an humble manner the birthday of their inspiration, Swami Vivekananda. The food packets are self prepared by the members of the OISTIC itself, and are distributed across the adjoining slums and different railway stations.
